British Residency, Lucknow

A Witness to History

The British Residency in Lucknow is a old place that was very important during the 1857 Revolt, also called the First War of Indian Independence. It was built in the late 18th century by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula and was a home for British officials.

During the Siege of Lucknow (1857), the Residency became a fighting place where British soldiers were stuck for more than 140 days, facing strong attacks from Indian fighters. The broken buildings still have bullet holes and cannonball marks, showing the scary past.

Today, the place is a protected site, with war memorials, graves of British soldiers, and a museum with things from the rebellion. The British Residency is a quiet witness to India’s fight for freedom, making it a must-see for history lovers.
